Maui Ballet was borne from the idea to support young dancers on Maui in unique ways during the Covid-19 pandemic. As 2020 spring performances were cancelled across the globe, young artists were unable to showcase their work for live audiences, leaving them with unfulfilled dreams.
Traveling to Maui weekly for over 27 years offering her expertise in training and choreography, Virginia Holte has both a long history in classical ballet, and love for the Maui dance community. As the founder and artistic director of West Hawaii Dance Theatre & Academy on the Big Island, she envisioned a way to continue teaching her Maui students thru virtual instruction. “Passing it down to the future generation” is what keeps classical ballet alive.
Following up a successful inaugural performance, Selections from Don Quixote, and the subsequent Summer Intensive, Maui Ballet now offers ongoing weekly classes for all ages.
Selections from Don Quixote is available for streaming online with a small donation. View now.

Today’s dancers need to be versatile. We provide a blended version of Cecchetti, Russian and French ballet technique in our classes.
Speak the Language
The specific language of ballet is imperative to success.
Understand the language of ballet is empowering, dancers are more confident and more easily grasp the meaning behind the movements which results in proper execution.
The more you know...
Our body is our instrument. We educate students on body parts and systems, and how they interrelate to improve technique and make our body move more efficiently.
• Injury Prevention
The combination of cutting edge complementary movement systems such as Yoga, Pilates, BodyCode®, Zena Rommett Floor-Barre®, and the GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® Methods are studied to give dancers the edge they need for today’s demanding choreography.
• Dance History
Learn from the Past
Ballet traces its origins from the Italian Renaissance in the 15th & 16th Centuries. In order to move forward in art, one needs to trace back to its roots. By exploring these traditions, and the composers that were responsible for the music, we get a better sense of interpretation of the roles in ballets that we learn and perform.
Dancers learn, rehearse and perform selections from some of the most endearing classical ballets of all times. Performances empower dancers through active participation, strengthening their confidence, self-esteem, and artistry.
The Youth American Grand Prix (YAGP) is the largest international student ballet competition and scholarship program. Specific Classical Ballet variations are required to enter the competition. Maui Ballet is well-versed in preparing students to successfully enter the competition.
